EDC Talks: Why Are SEL Skills Important?

It’s possible to teach students the skills they need to succeed, says Jim Vetter.

“When we think about what we want for young people in our lives,” says EDC’s Jim Vetter, “we want them to grow up to be happy, successful, contributing adults.”

How can schools foster that transition? By teaching problem-solving, self-regulation, and empathy—all known as social and emotional learning (SEL) skills.

In this video, Vetter shares the importance of teaching SEL skills early and often. He also discusses his own work at EDC to support the implementation of SEL programs in schools and the long-term impact that these efforts could have.
