HIV Policy Development in the Education Sector

Schools are both educational environments and workplaces that employ thousands of people in the Caribbean. Educational systems can play an important role in protecting the health of those who work within them and the students who learn and play there. Policies within the education sector and workplace in the Bahamas must therefore address the HIV and AIDS epidemic. A three day workshop in the Bahamas was planned and conducted by EDC to develop a draft Education Sector Policy for HIV and AIDS. EDC used the rapid policy development process that was piloted in Trinidad and Tobago in 2006 as well as the EDC document: Step By Step: a Guide to HIV and AIDS Policy Development for the Education Sector developed under the Caribbean Education Sector HIV and AIDS Capacity Building Programme funded by CARICOM. The workshop was conducted on February 13-15, 2008 in partnership with The Bahamas National Commission for UNESCO, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health, The National AIDS Coordinating Committee (NACC), the International Labour Organisation (ILO), and other stakeholders.
