EDC’s Science and Mathematics Programs and its Center for Children and Technology are undertaking a joint research and development project aimed at enhancing teachers’ ability to provide science education. The project will develop a prototype electronic version of a teacher’s guide (eTG) and conduct a series of classroom-based studies to determine its impact on teachers’ learning and practice, particularly in relation to the fidelity with which teachers modify and adapt instructional materials at the secondary level. The eTG will be based on a print teacher’s guide developed for a 12-week genetics unit from Foundation Science: Biology, an NSF-funded high school science curriculum developed by EDC, and it will present new media features that support the needs of a range of teachers, customizing the content and providing different interfaces and layers for teacher resources and pedagogical supports.
