As one of the "spies" cited in Susan's email, I want to confirm that Barbara
Markham and Robert Gabrick were terrific in presenting on LOC at the recent
OAH convention. I thought that I knew the site fairly well, but, boy, did I
ever learn a lot. And I got to view their lesson plan close up, too, which
I hadn't done in the past. Shame on me, but not any more: I am going to use
that thing in my classes next school year, for certain. Furthermore, Barbara
and Robert flushed Patricia Molen Van Ee, from the LOC's Map division, out
of the audience to do a quickie demonstration on how to find and use the
wonderful maps present in the collection. That just blew me away, too. And
Patricia has promised me a special tour in July when I am in DC for the
Fellows' institute. During that same session they even persuaded me
(another "ringer" in the audience) to show my Jackie Robinson lesson plan
from the site. The session was indeed very well-attended, and received so
enthusiastically. I was one of the people who would just not let Robert and
Barbara go without exchanging email addresses, experiences as Fellows,
experiences in completing lesson plans, and so on. One woman from the
audience even asked Barbara and Robert whether they had been granted a year
off from teaching in order to do the lesson plan! Don't we wish. But that
shows how excellent their work is: it looks look a year's worth of full-time
work from each of them while doing nothing else.

The LOC is so well represented by its Fellows and staff members at these
conventions; it's a pleasure and honor to count myself among that group.
And you would simply not believe how people (colleagues) view you, as if you
were wearing a halo, when they discover that you are a Fellow. Great work,
    Robert, Barbara, and Patricia.
