Hi, Found this notice about a PBS web site on democracy on another list and
thought you'd be interested.
Judy
The 2000 presidential campaign is now in full swing, and the
implications of the election for all of us as citizens are great. Our
students must learn to appreciate involvement in government and
politics, as well as an appreciation of our history, and there’s no
better way to do that than through the PBS Democracy Project
(http://www.pbs.org/democracy).
The official opening date of the Democracy Project web page and
activities was August 25, and will include links to various election and
history-related websites, as well as several activities for both
elementary and secondary students.
On the elementary level, there are three online activities, “How
Government Affects Me”, “Inside the Voting Booth”, and “President for a
Day”, as well as fourteen other supporting activities for math, language
arts, and social studies classes.
High school activities include the “Build Your Own Campaign” series,
which includes activities on polling, running an election, and
presidential powers, as well as other activities. In addition, high
school students can compete to win an all-expense paid trip to
Washington, D.C. to participate in a weeklong civic education program.
(The prize is provided through the support of the Mazda Foundation.)
Teachers are invited to either participate in the entire range of
activities or select various activities to fit their curriculum and time
frame. In addition, many of the activities are designed to work well in
a “team teaching” situation, in which teachers of various disciplines
can work together to bring these lessons to a large number of deserving
students.
