Hi Judith (and everyone):
I think the level of expertise rises with each succeeding group...I know
that this year's bunch will start way ahead of where Cynthia and I were.
Thanks, of course, to your own continuous improvement cycle, the level of
understanding in the country about the use of primary sources, and the
quality of the candidates you get!
This sounds like a platitude, but I would also like the teams to know what
a wonderful year-long journey it has been. Worth the effort... Your
support, your willingness to go the extra mile all along has been a
lifeline for us!
Looking back, I realize how my own knowledge and sophistication has
increased as a result of the trial run with kids, the reflection about
what might have been/could be/will be. I'm now planning an oral history
project next year with a different team and different age group, but it
already feels as if I'm so much more comfortable with the
possibilities...and this comes from a person (me!) who has YET to do a
curriculum with any repeated regularity...since our school asks teachers
to develop curriculum each year!!!
I would also suggest that the teachers come with open minds about
historical inquiry, in terms of what they can ask of kids. I am learning
that I can expect a greater level of constructivist learning if I DO
expect it...kids CAN...and DO!
At the risk of waxing sappy, I want to thank everyone at AMMem who has
helped us, whether it was in the wings figuring out logistics or up front
helping us vision. You're like a orchestra...and the music is lovely!
