    What's New This Week on the Librarians' Index to the Internet
 There are 15 Internet resources for "new this week" as of Mar 29, 1999.

Directories

    Internet School Library Media Center -
http://falcon.jmu.edu/~ramseyil/
        The ISLMC is an extensive directory of Internet resources
        designed for teachers and librarians. In addition to sites
        supplementing the usual k-12 curriculum, there are special
        sections devoted to the Holocaust, vocational and special
        education, professional organizations and publications,
        Kid's Stuff, and Online Full E-texts. Most of the links have
        brief annotations. Searchable by subject and personal name
        indexes, site map, and keyword. The site, hosted by James
        Madison University in Virginia, also has sections devoted to
        resources on Virginia and Virginia school curriculum. - mg

        Demographic data reported by the school district to the
        California Department of Education, includes location,
        legislative districts and members, school demographics,
        student counts, technology, alternative education
        enrollment, students by ethnic group,
        limited-English-proficient (LEP) students, certified and
        classified staff, teaching credentials, teachers by ethnic
        groups, teachers for LEP students, average class size, and
        links to STAR test results. Site also links to a glossary
        explaining the elements in the profile. Site is awkward to
        navigate. Read the instructions carefully. - rs

        A Life in Song celebrates "the artistic development and
        musical career of Marian Anderson." This biographical site
        includes images of early recital programs, information about
        her teachers, coaches, and accompanists as well as her
        tours. Also included is a brief history of spirituals in recital.
        There is a searchable collection of more than 4000 photos
        along with sound and video clips from both music and
        interviews. Developed from materials in archives housed at

        An interactive and educational view of the automobile using
        Java applets. This program contains over one hundred
        illustrations of the automobile with animations and
        thousands of descriptive links. Site is searchable through a
        keyword search feature and three indexes: image, animation,

        A free online basic baking school for home bakers. Lessons
        (with quizzes) cover cookies, breads, cakes, icing, and pies.
        In addition there are pages on: sanitation and health, a
        glossary baking terms, hints and tips, starting a home
        baking business, a FAQ, recipe formulas, home baking
        recipes, and a link to Native American recipes. Sponsored
        by Baking Masters, a company that produces software and

        This site is a project that is creating computer models of
        Byzantine monuments that no longer exist. Each model
        includes a description and image of palaces, aqueducts,
        arches, columns, and other built objects originally located in

    Capital Punishment -

        This informative site from the California Department of
        Corrections contains detailed historical and current
        information on the death penalty in the state of California.
        Includes a current list of condemned inmates, lethal
        injection procedures, photographs of death row at San
        Quentin State Prison and the Central California Women's
        Facility, and descriptions of last meals and last words of
        recent prisoners before execution. Also includes graphic
        summaries of murders and other capital crimes of
        defendants executed since California reinstated the death

        This site provides information on many aspects of castles in
        Great Britain including how they were built, why they
        declined, dungeons, weapons for besieging, and more.
        There are images and ground plans for some, information
        about what life in a castle was like, as well as, types of jobs
        available in that time. The Map Room lists the names of
        castles in Wales, Scotland, England, and Ireland. The
        Castle Learning Center is provided to "encourage students
        of all ages to explore castles." Additionally, there is a list of
        organizations involved in castle preservation, a list of castles
        said to be inhabited by ghosts, a glossary, and related links.

    EPA Global Warming Site - http://www.epa.gov/globalwarming/
        This Environmental Protection Agency site provides
        extensive information on the problem of global warming. It
        discusses how greenhouse gas causes global warming,
        affects the climate and impacts many other things such as
        health, agriculture, and forests. The climatic change impact
        is presented for all 50 states. In addition, it explains
        preventive measures available at local, state, federal, and
        global levels. Slides and reports can be downloaded for

        Do you think there is conflict between science and religion?
        The answer you find here might surprise you. Featuring
        interviews and transcripts from the original documentary on
        PBS, the site offers a rich resource into this ageless

        and Genetics lead to a series of essays, with further
        suggested topics to explore. Highlighted phrases and names

        This site offers Quick Time tours of many Greek ruins
        including the Acropolis, the oracle of Delphi, Troy and
        many more. Movies allow users to virtually walk through
        these sites, and some have floor plans of the ruins. Requires
        the Quick Time plugin and the movies may be slow to load.

    Thompson, Snowshoe - 1827-1876 -

        A biography of John A. Thompson (aka Jon
        Torsteinson-Rue), a California legend, who delivered mail
        to snowbound residents of Sierra Nevada mountain
        communities from 1856 to 1876 by wearing "ski-skates"
        from his childhood in Norway. Thompson often rescued
        stranded travelers along his route, once travelling 400 miles
        in 10 days to save a man's life. Thompson later served on
        the Alpine County Board of Supervisors, and is the subject
        of a children's book, Snowshoe Thompson by Nancy
