The Heising-Simons Foundation is a family foundation based in Los Altos and San Francisco, California, working to “advance sustainable solutions in climate and clean energy, enable groundbreaking research in science, enhance the education of our youngest learners, and support human rights for all people.”

The Heising-Simons Foundation funds projects throughout the United States in the areas of climate and clean energy, community and opportunity, education, human rights, and science. Since its inception in 2007, Heising-Simons has awarded more than $1 billion in grants to projects in these fields.

EDC received its first Heising-Simons Foundation grant in 2015 for the Family Engagement in Early Math project. Since then, the Foundation has continued to support the work of EDC’s Young Mathematicians project, which seeks to transform the way that educators and families interact with young children around mathematics.

From 2019 to 2022, Foundation funding enabled Young Mathematicians to establish strong partnerships with thousands of families and early educators in Worcester, Massachusetts, helping to foster positive attitudes toward mathematics.

In 2023, the Heising-Simons Foundation supported the expansion of this innovative and promising model of family math to a new community: York, Pennsylvania. The new initiative, which links Young Mathematicians with EDC’s First 10 initiative, will provide families and community partners with knowledge, tools, and resources to create math learning opportunities that bridge contexts and that help all children learn and thrive.

We thank the Heising-Simons Foundation for their support and look forward to continuing to work with them in the future.
