Prevention - HIV/AIDS

HIV is responsible for more deaths each year than any other infectious disease. EDC collaborates with partners all over the world to create and disseminate culturally relevant, science-based prevention strategies, which have proven to be effective in curbing the disease. We also work at both the policy and community levels to rebuild educational systems in regions where schools and teaching forces have been decimated by HIV.

Sudan Radio Service

As part of an effort to increase the participation of South Sudanese in the peace process and now the civic life of their new nation, the Sudan Radio Service provides access to balanced and useful information through radio-based education, news, and entertainment programs presented by local presenters in nine languages. Independent research found that Sudan Radio Service has approximately one million listeners.

Sudan Radio Service also builds the capacity of Sudanese journalists through its Certificate in Broadcast Journalism program and through on-the-job training.

Monitoring and Evaluation: Capacity Building in the Caribbean Education Sector for a Comprehensive Response to HIV/AIDS

EDC will continue to support the Caribbean’s education sector in their comprehensive response to HIV and AIDS. To build their capacity in program monitoring and evaluation, EDC will organize a regional, multi-agency, inter-sectoral workshop to reach consensus on the draft framework developed previously and outline the content of an accompanying capacity development tool; draft the capacity development toolkit; circulate and revise the monitoring and evaluation framework and capacity development toolkit; and integrate comments and recommended revisions from regional and national partners.

Education for All and HIV Prevention

Education International (EI), EDC, and the World Health Organization work with teacher-union affiliates in nearly 50 countries in Africa, Asia, Caribbean, and Latin America to prevent new HIV infections, increase the number of learners completing basic education, and mitigate the impact of HIV and AIDS on achieving Education For All Goals. This work involves a range of activities including training, policy development, advocacy, research, publicity and communications.

EDC e-Learning & Capacity Building Assistance Center

The new EDC e-Learning & Capacity Building Assistance Center will promote the effective delivery of evidence-based behavioral interventions, early HIV counseling, testing, and referrals to African American and Latino communities which are disproportionately burdened by the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Salud y el Exito: Addressing Proven Factors in HIV Prevention for Latino Youth

Padres Unidos por la Salud y el Éxito de Nuestros Hijos will assess an intervention aimed at reducing behaviors among youth that lead to elevated levels of HIV/AIDS in urban Latino communities. The intervention, Salud y Éxito, consists of parent education delivered through bilingual audio-CDs to promote positive parenting practices. Salud y Éxito Más will also be tested. This enhanced version of the parent-mediated approach integrates audio-CD parent education with a school-based parent involvement program, PALMS Tools for Latino Family Outreach.

Reducing HIV Risks Among African American Teens

This rigorous three-arm randomized experiment tests whether an innovative multi-year parent-mediated HIV intervention, Preparing Our Sons and Daughters for Healthy Futures, reduces HIV risks among African American youth living in high-poverty urban neighborhoods. About 1500 families with 6th graders in New York City public schools are being enrolled and will be followed through 9th grade.

HEAR Sudan

Serving communities in the Three Areas, HEAR Sudan builds capacity of local stakeholders to plan, implement and monitor health and education services, helps translate this increased capacity into action, and builds community support for school governance and outreach. HEAR strengthens linkages between educators and health workers with the aim of increasing healthy girls’ and boys’ access to quality education.

New Passage to Prevention

Drawing on a long history of evidence-based prevention programs and intervention strategies developed to combat HIV and AIDS, EDC plays a key role in efforts to ramp up prevention efforts by efficiently and effectively reaching out to the largest groups most at risk.

Zambia Quality Education Services Through Technology (QUESTT) Project

The Zambia QUESTT Project aims to improve the quality of basic education delivery systems and to mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS on children’s educational experiences (both in and out of government schools). To accomplish these objectives, QUESTT is leading several initiatives to improve teacher practice through the integration of Interactive Radio Instruction (IRI) in government schools and technology-based interventions. These interventions include the use of video and cell phone communication for both in-service and preservice teacher support.
