Professional Development

Like medical and legal professionals, educators need and deserve access to continual and high-quality professional education. EDC develops, implements, and evaluates professional development programs for teachers and administrators at every stage of their career growth—from university-based, pre-service programs to continuing education programs integrated into the daily work of experienced teachers. In the U.S., many of our professional development projects focus on helping teachers and administrators deepen their content knowledge through immersion in rigorous challenges and close analysis of student work. Many of our global projects focus on helping educators integrate active learning approaches into more traditional classroom practices. On a broader level, we work to restructure professional development systems by creating "communities of practice" within and among schools.

Technology Tools for Teaching and Training in India (T4)

The Technology Tools for Teaching and Training (dot-EDU T4) project seeks to assist the education departments in the Indian states of Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Delhi, for quality teaching and learning for the primary education sector. To this end, dot-EDU T4 has created interactive, multimedia tools in audio, video, and software formats that established new standards for education quality while delivering education services on a large scale and reaching out to girls and other vulnerable populations.

Regional Educational Laboratory Northeast and Islands (REL-NEI)

The Regional Educational Laboratory Northeast and Islands (REL-NEI) is one of ten regional laboratories and has a mission to help pre-K–16 educators use the best available evidence to make decisions leading to improved student achievement and reduced performance gaps. REL-NEI places a special emphasis on helping states, districts, and schools build capacity to use their data effectively; forming and conducting high-quality research and evaluation through new “research alliances”; and helping regional education stakeholders incorporate data-based inquiry practices into their decision-making.

Somali Interactive Radio Instruction Program (SIRIP)

The Somali Interactive Radio Instruction Program (SIRIP) provides high-quality interactive audio programs to Somali children attending formal, non-governmental, Quranic and community schools. With the assistance of the audio programs, teachers lead the classes and are thus trained in interactive teaching methods which include stories, activities, educational songs and other forms of active learning pedagogy. Supplemental materials accompany the programs, providing schools with the resources to support sound, primary-level instruction.

Pre-Service Teacher Education Program (Pre-STEP)

The Pre-Service Teacher Education (PreSTEP) program has the primary objective of helping the Government of Pakistan develop, introduce, and implement effective curricula for a new four-year bachelor’s degree in education and a two-year associate degree in education. To achieve this goal, PreSTEP helps provincial governments create systems, policies and standards that ensure the effective execution of these degree programs.

Teacher Professional Development Program in South Sudan (TPDP)

The Teacher Professional Development Program is a three-year, nationwide program supported by the United States Agency for International Development that focuses on strengthening primary school education. The program will assist the Ministry of Education set policy and management of the overall education system, improve teacher performance through certification, accreditation, and supervision, develop the Unified Curriculum for teachers, improve gender equity in the education system, improve English language skills, and provide training and learning resources.

Teacher Motivation Training Project

The Benin Teacher Motivation and Training (TMT) Project is working to improve training and performance of teachers. TMT consists of a number of simple interventions focused around a key theme—a set of clear expectations for teacher performance based on international standards of excellence. The use of this clear and universal set of standards will ensure that all systems meant to support and motivate teachers are focused on the same issues—improving teachers’ and thereby students’ chances of success.

Educational Quality Improvement Program 3: Learning and Earning for Out-of-school Youth (EQUIP3)

The Educational Quality Improvement Program 3 (EQUIP3) is a Leader-with-Associate Award that is designed to improve earning, learning, and skill development opportunities for out-of-school youth in developing countries.

EQUIP3/Education Quality and Access for Learning and Livelihood Skills (EQuALLS) Phase 2

EQuALLS2 increases access to quality basic education and livelihood skills in areas most affected by conflict and poverty in the Philippines (primarily the Muslim areas in the Mindanao island group in the south). EQuALLS2 is a large-scale project that seeks to benefit 345,000 children and youth in 37 municipalities and four cities by training 37,238 educators and school officials, building the capacity of 850 local education stakeholder groups, and expanding local education resources through public-private partnerships.

EQUIP3/Shaqodoon: Somalia Youth Livelihood Program

The Shaqodoon program was created to provide Somali youth with greater access to training, internships, work and self-employment opportunities in order to productively engage youth and add to the stability and development of the region. Shaqodoon is Somali for “jobseekers”.

Decentralized Basic Education in Indonesia: Teaching and Learning

USAID’s Decentralized Basic Education (DBE) Program Objective 2 seeks to improve the quality of teaching and learning in Indonesia’s public and private sector primary schools. DBE 2 builds upon successful aspects of recent initiatives in Indonesia to improve educational quality through new attention to strengthening teacher training and improving school learning environments. The DBE 2 Partnership works with public and private sector partners to develop a more comprehensive system of teacher professional development.
