The 2015 National Assessment of Educational Progress—otherwise known as the nation’s report card—found that two-thirds of eighth graders in the United States were not proficient in mathematics. To support struggling learners, many schools have added mathematics intervention classes, but little is known about how these classes are actually being implemented or how effective they are.

EDC’s Strengthening Mathematics Interventions project is studying current approaches of middle grades mathematics intervention teachers, as well as the common challenges they face, with the goal of producing a professional development program to help these teachers improve their classroom instruction.

Key Activities

As part of the Strengthening Mathematics Interventions project, EDC staff will:

  • Conduct an observational study and a national survey of the current landscape of mathematics intervention classes at the middle grades
  • Design and implement a blended professional development program specifically for mathematics intervention teachers in grades 6–8
