Student Work Toolkit

CLLC is working with New York City’s central mathematics office to develop what is being called a “Student Work Toolkit.” This toolkit will help Regional Instructional Specialists support coaches in their efforts to influence the practice of teachers. The toolkit will enable coaches to: (1) select tasks in the curricula that can lead to productive student-work discussions; (2) build teachers’ capacity to improve in selecting tasks that can enhance classroom assessment; (3) select student work samples that might be productive to talk about with teachers; (4) frame student work discussions so that teachers develop a deeper understanding of the mathematics represented in the tasks and the mathematical thinking represented in the student work; and (5) link discussions of student work to learning expectations represented in the state mathematics standards and guide teachers to draw the appropriate instructional implications from the student work.
