Learning and Teaching Algebra (LTA) will build on promising work in its initial stages, work that attacks in tandem both of the root causes for poor student achievement: incoherence in student curricula and in professional development. Specifically, EDC will focus on teachers in urban, grade-8, Algebra 1 settings. Building on a proven student curriculum, CME Project, which develops serious mathematics, project staff will develop a program of coaching, professional development, and assessment, creating a coherent package that, in early pre-pilot versions, already shows great promise to raise both teacher quality and student performance.
