Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse and Violence Prevention

The Center helps college and community leaders develop, implement, and evaluate programs and policies to reduce student problems related to alcohol and other drug use and interpersonal violence. In order to produce enduring, large-scale changes that will make students’ social and cultural environment healthier and safer, the Center supports a comprehensive approach to prevention, grounded in environmental management strategies that address the institutional, community, and public policy factors related to these problems. Fundamental to the Center’s philosophy is its reliance on strategic planning, thus providing colleges and universities with a process – rather than a product – they can use to tackle the alcohol and other drug abuse and violence issues that arise on their campus. The Center encourages the development of a prevention infrastructure, primarily by facilitating campus-and-community coalitions and statewide prevention initiatives, as well as providing trainings, technical assistance, publications, and a Web site to support these efforts.
