Focus on Mathematics, Phase II: Mathematical Habits of Mind for Teaching

EDC is collaborating with Boston University and St. Olaf College to study the mathematical habits of mind (i.e., ways of approaching and thinking about mathematical problems) that secondary teachers use in their professional lives and to develop research instruments for measuring such habits. The project is developing, testing, and refining a pencil-and-paper assessment tool to measure the nature and degree of mathematical habits of mind for teaching and conducting case studies to better understand the mathematical habits secondary mathematics teachers use in their instruction. This work is funded by the NSF’s Math and Science Partnership Program.
