Focus on Mathematics, Phase II: Mathematical Habits of Mind for Teaching

EDC is collaborating with Boston University and St. Olaf College to study the mathematical habits of mind (i.e., ways of approaching and thinking about mathematical problems) that secondary teachers use in their professional lives and to develop research instruments for measuring such habits.

Through the Focus on Mathematics, Phase II project, EDC is:

  • Developing, testing, and refining an assessment tool to measure the nature and degree of mathematical habits of mind for teaching
  • Conducting case studies to better understand the mathematical habits of mind that secondary mathematics teachers use in their instruction

This project is funded by the National Science Foundation’s Math and Science Partnership Program.

EDC Project Director: Al Cuoco

Duration: 2009–2013

Funder: National Science Foundation

(EDC is a subcontractor on this project to Boston University.)
