Evaluation of Environmental Science Schools (ES2) Project

The Environmental Science Schools (ES2) project hopes to build a community of elementary schools in Boston in which the science program is a highly motivating experience for students, inspiring them to read more, write more, and use mathematics. The evaluation of this project aims to investigate the following questions: (1) To what extent, if any, do children who attend ES2 schools understanding science concepts better as a result of their school’s participation in this initiative? (2) To what extent, if any, do children who attend ES2 schools exhibit a growing awareness of and appreciation for the natural environment they encounter in their neighborhoods? (3) To what extent, if any, do teachers alter their use of instructional time for science in response to the ES2 initiative?
