At the request of Mote Marine Laboratory’s Center for Distance Learning, CCT is evaluating Digital Docents—a new program designed to help educators teach ocean science to visitors at museums and libraries across the nation. Digital Docents, funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, combines traveling exhibits with live, interactive videoconference programs created at Mote and shown at participating institutions (a partnership of libraries, science centers, aquariums, and a zoo extending from Alaska to Florida). During the 20- to 30-minute live shows, visitors of all ages will have the ability to interact in real-time with educators from Mote, learning how ocean science relates to their environments. As part of its evaluation, CCT is developing a set of surveys—including both large-scale and feedback-oriented—to track program outcomes during program conferences, pilot testing, and the implementation of the first exhibit. CCT is also conducting informal observations and interviews throughout the development and implementation process. Findings will be used to create a comprehensive How-To Guide for libraries and museums wishing to employ the Digital Docent model.
