EDC Marks National Suicide Prevention Week (September 7–13)

In observance of National Suicide Prevention Week (September 7–13) and World Suicide Prevention Day (September 10), EDC offers the following actions, resources, and events to promote suicide prevention worldwide. Additional events and resources can be found at the Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC) and the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention (Action Alliance).

Actions

  • Check out SPRC’s 12 actions for promoting suicide prevention.
  • Read SPRC Director Jerry Reed’s Director’s Corner celebrating the efforts of our partner organizations in suicide prevention.

Events

  • Thursday, September 10: Congressional Briefing 1 p.m. (ET), Cannon Office Building, Room 121, Washington, D.C.
    The Action Alliance will present “Prioritizing Suicide Prevention Research,” a briefing sponsored by Representatives Grace Napolitano and John Katko. EDC’s Doryn Chervin (Action Alliance) will be among the presenters.
  • Tuesday, September 15: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Grand Rounds Presentation 1 p.m. (ET)
    Jerry Reed will present “Progress, Partnerships, and Optimism” at the next CDC Grand Rounds Presentation. The theme for the September session is “Preventing Suicide: A Comprehensive Public Health Approach,” and participants will discuss strategies for promoting suicide prevention awareness and the role of public health. Registration required.

Resources

EDC works across international, national, state, and local boundaries to integrate suicide and violence prevention into public health and health care systems. We also gather data to inform policies and practices so that efforts are targeted to communities where the greatest impact can be achieved.
