EDC is launching Habits of Mind, a new blog featuring posts from mathematicians, educators, and researchers in an exploration of mathematics teaching and learning. Habits of Mind is featured on the new website for EDC’s Mathematical Practice Institute (MPI), which offers educators a range of professional development, curriculum and support, and technical assistance services.
“Our blog name comes from EDC’s philosophy that the widespread effectiveness of mathematics comes not just from mastering specific skills, but also from developing the ways of thinking about mathematics—what we call ‘mathematical habits of mind,’ ” said EDC’s Eden Badertscher, director of MPI. “We have asked our bloggers to be provocative and to offer new ways of thinking about the practice and application of mathematics today.”
The first Habits of Mind post is written by EDC distinguished scholar Al Cuoco, whose research informed the writing of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. The post features his response to the current controversies surrounding the Standards.
The blog is just one component of the new MPI website, which incorporates EDC’s long experience of working closely with schools, districts, and states to improve students’ mathematics learning and achievement. The site will also host webinars on the implementation of the Mathematics Standards, professional development workshops and institutes on a variety of mathematical topics, and curricula support. In addition to resources for purchase, the site offers free white papers, presentations, and updates on EDC’s research and evaluation projects, all aimed at the audience of mathematics teachers, teacher educators, and mathematicians.
“Our team consists of teachers, mathematicians, and administrators, many of whom have devoted their careers to helping teachers bring serious mathematics to their students,” said EDC’s Kevin Waterman. “The new blog will allow us to share useful and interesting information, and we welcome thoughts and comments on our posts from all of our education colleagues.”
