EDC Annual Report Wins Publishing Award

NEWTON, MA | June 8, 2011

A Better Future, the 2009 annual report of Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC), has received the Beacon Award for Excellence in Education Marketing. This prestigious prize is bestowed annually by the Association of Educational Publishers (AEP), a national association whose members include publishers, schools, universities, researchers, for-profit companies, and nonprofit organizations.

The 2009 annual report, featuring a full-cover photograph of a young girl taken by EDC photojournalist Karl Grobl in the Philippines, was awarded the prize during a luncheon ceremony at AEP’s Annual Summit in Washington, D.C. EDC Director of Communications Daphne Northrop received the award.

The Beacon Awards “aim to identify products that exemplify the highest standards of professional, quality educational content, and set benchmarks to which the rest of the industry can aspire,” according to the AEP website. Products are judged on design and editorial quality, efficacy in reaching intended audience, and overall cohesiveness. Past Beacon Award winners have included The Wall Street Journal, Scholastic Inc., and Pearson Education.

EDC’s winning report, which featured shorter stories and a more streamlined design than a typical annual report, is illustrated with striking full-color photographs. Brief descriptions showcasing EDC’s work around the world highlight an EDC entrepreneurship project in the Philippines, the EdTech Leaders Online program, and an initiative, in partnership with the National Center for PTSD and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, to help veterans returning from war zones deal with post-traumatic stress.

EDC’s Success at the Core program also garnered AEP awards; it won the Distinguished Achievement Award and a Golden Lamp Award in the Professional Development category. These were presented to EDC’s Barbara Miller in the evening at an awards dinner.

EDC annual reports Tangible Results (2007) and Portraits of Learning in Action (2004) were previous Beacon Award winners. EDC’s magazine EDC Update received the Beacon Award in 2010 for best magazine/newsletter.
