A new resource seeks to increase Alaska Native youths’ interest in geoscience careers.
Whether they are watching for the eruption of Mount Redoubt or discussing oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Alaskans have a unique view of the splendor and challenges in the natural world. Despite this, many Alaska Native youths do not consider studying geosciences or pursuing careers in the field. EDC is evaluating a new resource aimed at increasing Alaska Natives’ exposure to and involvement in the geosciences.
The Alaska resource is a new section of Teachers’ Domain, a free digital library developed by WGBH with funding from the National Science Foundation. The site includes video and audio segments, lesson plans for teachers, and student-oriented activities.
“Some teachers might use the materials to direct lessons, while others may turn it over to the students themselves to do research or presentations,” says EDC’s Shelley Pasnik. “The materials give students a more engaging experience and are meant to support their understanding of the geosciences and to provide potential career and study pathways.”
The two-year evaluation of Teachers’ Domain is funded by WGBH.
