Online Math Training for Military-Base Schools

April 30, 2006

The Department of Defense Education Activity operates 200 schools in 13 countries that enroll more than 100,000 students—the children of military service members and Department of Defense civilian employees. EDC is providing online training and materials to nearly 3,000 teachers who work in these schools.

Current offerings include four online professional development courses and curriculum guides for K–8 math and high school algebra, geometry, and math analysis. Two of the online courses are aimed at high school teachers of Algebra I and Geometry. The other two courses are online versions of the EDC-created Developing Mathematical Ideas curriculum. The online math curriculum guides include information about content, effective instructional practices, sample lesson plans, and assessment tools.

“By creating various sources of professional development, such as online courses and easily accessible online curriculum guides, we hope to advance the teaching and learning of mathematics for K–12 teachers,” says EDC’s Fred Gross.
