While pregnancy rates among teens in the United States have declined over the past decade, they continue to remain higher among Latinas than any other ethnic group. An innovative EDC teen pregnancy program, shown to be successful among English-speaking families, is now being tailored for Spanish-speaking communities.
Guardando Sexo para Después (“Saving Sex for Later”) offers skills and information for parents to encourage healthy behaviors among their adolescent sons and daughters. The program includes three audio CDs and a print brochure. Listeners are introduced to fictional families who model parental oversight of preteens’ behavior, initiate conversations about sexuality, communicate rules, and monitor activities.
Adapting the program for diverse Spanish-speaking families “is not simply translating the English version into Spanish,” says EDC’s Alexi San Doval. “Making it culturally relevant includes directly involving the Latino community and agency partners in the process to gather their input.”
This program is supported by the Annie E. Casey Foundation.
