The Tribal Youth Program (TYP) Training and Technical Assistance (T/TA) Center addresses the need to strengthen American Indian and Alaska Native juvenile justice and other systems–education, mental health and social services, culture, recreation and employment programs–all critical to Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention’s mission of reducing juvenile delinquency, violence, child victimization, and increasing the safety of tribal communities.
The Hewlett-Packard Learning Initiative for Entrepreneurs (HPLIFE)is a global program that helps students, potential entrepreneurs, and small business owners establish and grow their businesses by providing online and face-to-face training in IT and business skills. EDC has developed an online modular curriculum for HPLIFE that covers the topics of finance, marketing, operations, and communication.
The YES (Youth Employability Skills) Network will connect the supply and demand side of labor in Macedonia through various interventions in order to raise the quality of workers and connect them more readily to jobs.
The Excellence in Innovation project identifies “high impact” information and communications technologies (ICTs) that can quickly and significantly strengthen the competitiveness of target industries. The project co-invests with local entrepreneurs to create self-sustainable “e-BIZ Enterprises,” which offer the high impact ICT services at affordable prices to all businesses in a target industry. The goal: more competitive and profitable small and medium enterprises, more and better jobs, high levels of local co-investment and foreign direct investment.
Supported Literacy for Adolescents is a research-based literacy program. Its goal is to improve reading, writing, and comprehension among both high-risk and typically achieving populations. The program is deeply rooted in standards-based curriculum design, and all components of the program align with national reading and writing standards, as well as selected content standards.
The National Center on Program Management and Fiscal Operations works to strengthen the management of Head Start and Early Head Start programs. The Center will showcase best practices in program and fiscal planning, as well as address issues such as risk management, governance, data collection and analysis, and budgeting and cost allocation. Also, the Center will help organizations strengthen their infrastructure to better support a well-managed system of early care and education.
The Regional Educational Laboratory Northeast and Islands (REL-NEI) is one of ten regional laboratories and has a mission to help pre-K–16 educators use the best available evidence to make decisions leading to improved student achievement and reduced performance gaps.
The Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) program is designed to increase opportunities for students and teachers to learn about and use information technologies within the contexts of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Youth-based projects that have strong emphases on career and educational paths
EQuALLS2 increases access to quality basic education and livelihood skills in areas most affected by conflict and poverty in the Philippines (primarily the Muslim areas in the Mindanao island group in the south). EQuALLS2 is a large-scale project that seeks to benefit 345,000 children and youth in 37 municipalities and four cities by training 37,238 educators and school officials, building the capacity of 850 local education stakeholder groups, and expanding local education resources through public-private partnerships.
This project aims to enhance the capacity of American Indian and Alaska Native tribes’ to operate tribal juvenile detention centers that offer culturally appropriate, comprehensive support services and educational and vocational programming in green technologies to detained and reentering youth.
The goals of this program are to reduce recidivism rates and increase successful transitions back into youths’ communities, along with increased employment opportunities for them.
The Educational Quality Improvement Program 3 (EQUIP3) is a Leader-with-Associate Award that is designed to improve earning, learning, and skill development opportunities for out-of-school youth in developing countries.
The Southern Sudan Interactive Radio Instruction (SSIRI) project is a program of the Southern Sudan Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST). Four SSIRI activities provide learning opportunities for children, adults, and teachers in South Sudan.

Ruwwad, taken from the Arabic word for “pioneers,” is a ground-breaking program created by Palestinians, for Palestinians. Its mission is to empower Palestinian youth and the adults who serve them, so that both groups can become strong local leaders and change-makers. Since 2005, Ruwwad has been planned, designed, and implemented “by youth, for youth,” with a focus on positive leadership development for young women and men ages 14 to 30.
USAID’s Decentralized Basic Education (DBE) Program Objective 2 seeks to improve the quality of teaching and learning in Indonesia’s public and private sector primary schools. DBE 2 builds upon successful aspects of recent initiatives in Indonesia to improve educational quality through new attention to strengthening teacher training and improving school learning environments. The DBE 2 Partnership works with public and private sector partners to develop a more comprehensive system of teacher professional development.
The Social Legacy Program (SLP) reaches out to youth and other vulnerable groups in the Europe and Eurasia region, giving them the tools they need to become local leaders and promote social change. Due to widespread socio-economic insecurity and a dramatic collapse in basic social services, these groups face great barriers to finding work and gaining viable skills, while the region on the whole struggles to make the transition towards market-oriented, democratic societies.
EDC contributes to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s economic growth by identifying “high impact” information and communication technologies (ICT) applications that will quickly and significantly improve the competitiveness of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in entire industries.
EDC and a technical committee of computer scientists and thought leaders in computational thinking (CT) will develop and validate a common core of CT skill sets used by scientists, technicians, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians in U.S.STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) workplaces.
The Akazi Kanoze Youth Livelihoods Project, an EQUIP3 Associate Award, aims to develop a thriving youth livelihood support system in Rwanda to increase the prosperity of not only youth, but also the public and private institutions that support and benefit from youths’ productive engagement in Rwandan society. To achieve this goal, Akazi Kanoze will provide youth in Kigali with market-relevant life and work readiness training and support, hands-on training opportunities, and links into the employment and self-employment job market.
The Garissa Youth Project (G-Youth Project) aims to empower youth in Kenya make sound career and life decisions as they transition from high school to the next phase of their lives. The project is also building the capacity of local institutions and networks to sustain the much-needed services that G-Youth will provide.
Early Language and Literacy Classroom Observation (ELLCO) is a tool for evaluating and improving classroom environments and teacher practices as they relate to children’s language and literacy development. EDC offers training-of-trainers events to build a team of qualified professionals who can provide ELLCO training nationwide.

The Young Entrepreneurs Program (YEP) aims to better prepare Kosovo youth for work in a growing market economy and for engaged citizenship in a developing democracy. To meet this goal, the YEP team will work together with selected market areas, engaging employers and other local, regional, and national leaders to blend together resources, skills, and policies for a sustainable system of opportunities and supports for out of school and out of work young people.
EDC and the Lawrence Hall of Science (LHS) in Berkeley, California, are leading a national initiative to promote long-term professional development in project-based science for afterschool program providers.
The project is developing materials and training institutes to support a network of professional trainers from children’s museums, science centers, and 4-H affiliates across the country. These trainers will provide training and support to community-based organizations that implement high-quality, hands-on science and engineering projects for children.
The Shaqodoon program was created to provide Somali youth with greater access to training, internships, work and self-employment opportunities in order to productively engage youth and add to the stability and development of the region. Shaqodoon is Somali for “jobseekers”.
IDEJEN is an EQUIP3 Associate Award which was launched in 2003 to provide education and job training for youth ages 15–24 with little to no formal education. IDEJEN provides program participants support in the areas of employability and skills training, basic and vocational education, job placement and small business development. In addition to working directly with youth, IDEJEN provides technical support to different government ministries and is assisting in the development of the National Youth Policy and the Policy on Nonformal Basic Education.
ScienceQuest was a unique after-school program that supported community-based organizations who wanted to increase staff and organizational capacity; assisted youth (ages 10–14) in learning science, technology, and literacy; and increased the youths’ positive experiences with learning. Through training in I-Search methods and ongoing in-person and electronic support, coaches lead small groups in personally relevant explorations documented through youth-designed Web sites.
