School-Community Partnerships

A number of EDC projects work in partnership with both schools and communities, knitting together collective, multidisciplinary approaches to improving students' health and education. The success of a school improvement effort often hinges on communication and relationships between educators and community members. EDC projects view every school as a community resource, and every community as a resource for the schools.

Educational Quality Improvement Program 1: Building Educational Quality through Classrooms, Schools, and Communities (EQUIP1)

EQUIP1 is a multi-faceted program designed to raise the quality of classroom teaching and the level of student learning by effecting school-level changes. EDC is one of 15 partners in this Leader-with-Associates mechanism and participates in both Leader Award and Associate Award activities. As part of a larger EQUIP1 Leader Award cross-national study on educational quality, IDD conducted a comparative research study on perceptions and practices related to education quality in Islamic schools in three states in Nigeria and in the primarily Muslim Region 5 of Ethiopia.

Community Enterprise Support Project

Hewlett-Packard and EDC are partnering with Institute of Small and Medium Enterprises Development, Bangkok Non-Formal Education and College of Management in Mahidol University to implement a Community Enterprise Support Project (CESP) to support the economic development of working-poor communities in Bangkok. Working together with stakeholders, the project provides small business owners and entrepreneurs with technical assistance, management advice, technology solutions, and IT capacity building.

YouthLearn Fee for Service

EDC offers youth development professionals and educators comprehensive services and resources for using technology to create exciting learning environments. Created by the Morino Institute and now led by EDC, YouthLearn provides user-friendly tools to help organizational leaders and staff start or strengthen afterschool and in-school programs.

EQUIP3/Garissa Youth Project

Designed to respond to Garissan youths’ needs and assets, the Garissa Youth Project (G-Youth Project) aims to empower youth to make sound career and life decisions as they transition from high school to the next phase of their lives. The project is also building the capacity of local institutions and networks to sustain the much-needed services that G-Youth will provide.

Eyes on Bullying

Eyes on Bullying is a national, multimedia bullying prevention program designed to provide parents and caregivers with user-friendly and effective ways to learn the essential principles of bullying prevention. The multimedia program, initially developed for IBM employees, includes a 42-page Toolkit with key information, resources, and six skill-building activities for caregivers and parents to use with children.

Building Collaboration for Mental Health Services in California Schools

Building Collaboration for Mental Health Services in California Schools is an initiative funded by the California Department of Education through California’s Mental Health Services Act. This project aims to engage mental health and education professionals in an effective planning process to prepare for implementing California’s Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) in schools.

Tribal Youth Program Training & Technical Assistance Center

The Tribal Youth Program (TYP) Training and Technical Assistance (T/TA) Center addresses the need to strengthen American Indian and Alaska Native juvenile justice and other systems–education, mental health and social services, culture, recreation and employment programs–all critical to Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention’s mission of reducing juvenile delinquency, violence, child victimization, and increasing the safety of tribal communities.

Corrupt educational practices can harm the quality of students’ education, the reputation of a country’s institutions of higher learning, and the preparedness of a nation’s workforce. EDC is addressing the issue in Eastern Europe and Eurasia.

Urban Ecology is a project developed by the Urban Ecology Institute and Boston College to provide 7-12th grade teachers and students with scientific, instructional, and technological training in urban ecology field studies. This Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) project is funded by the National Science Foundation and supported by the Learning Resource Center at EDC.
