Prevention - HIV/AIDS

HIV is responsible for more deaths each year than any other infectious disease. EDC collaborates with partners all over the world to create and disseminate culturally relevant, science-based prevention strategies, which have proven to be effective in curbing the disease. We also work at both the policy and community levels to rebuild educational systems in regions where schools and teaching forces have been decimated by HIV.

Countering HIV/AIDS Discrimination

A network of educators is developing ways to respond to the HIV/AIDS crisis in the Caribbean.

One powerful way to support people living with HIV and AIDS is to involve them in strategies that address misconceptions and support prevention. With that in mind, EDC created resource for Caribbean educators and networks of people living with HIV and AIDS.

Advocacy and Leadership Campaign to Advance Education Response to HIV/AIDS

EDC and UNESCO’s Office for the Caribbean launched the Advocacy and Leadership campaign in three Caribbean countries: Belize, St. Lucia, and Trinidad and Tobago. Its mission is to influence decision makers in the education sector to strengthen their response regarding HIV/AIDS.

Online Resources Promote Safety

TEACH-VIP E-Learning presents a comprehensive list of topics to online learners, including injury prevention, measuring injuries and violence, and policy development and advocacy, as well as problem-specific content and self-assessments.

Redefining Gender Roles to Stop HIV

Unsafe school settings can put girls at risk for HIV.

For years, EDC trained African teachers on the basics of HIV prevention—consistently using a condom, for example, or asserting oneself in relationships. Yet teachers would return to environments where traditional gender roles did not support these behaviors.

HIV Policy Development in the Education Sector

Schools are both educational environments and workplaces that employ thousands of people in the Caribbean. Educational systems can play an important role in protecting the health of those who work within them and the students who learn and play there. Policies within the education sector and workplace in the Bahamas must therefore address the HIV and AIDS epidemic. A three day workshop in the Bahamas was planned and conducted by EDC to develop a draft Education Sector Policy for HIV and AIDS.
