EdTech Leaders® Online enables state departments of education, school districts, regional educational service centers, colleges and universities, and other educational organizations to develop local capacity to provide online professional development for teachers and administrators and online courses for students.
EDC is developing an assessment tool to help teachers quickly and effectively diagnose misconceptions students have about fractions and decimals. The Eliciting Mathematics Misconceptions (EM2) Project applies recent advances in cognitive science and mathematics education research to create a set of questions designed to assess these underlying misconceptions in grade 6 to 8 students. EM2 will develop and test an online interface that will record student responses, allow teachers to administer the questions electronically, and produce reports on each student’s misconceptions.
Supported Literacy for Adolescents is a research-based literacy program. Its goal is to improve reading, writing, and comprehension among both high-risk and typically achieving populations. The program is deeply rooted in standards-based curriculum design, and all components of the program align with national reading and writing standards, as well as selected content standards.
The Regional Educational Laboratory Northeast and Islands (REL-NEI) is one of ten regional laboratories and has a mission to help pre-K–16 educators use the best available evidence to make decisions leading to improved student achievement and reduced performance gaps.
The Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) program is designed to increase opportunities for students and teachers to learn about and use information technologies within the contexts of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Youth-based projects that have strong emphases on career and educational paths
The New York Comprehensive Center (NYCC) is one of 16 regional comprehensive centers that are federally funded to implement the mandates of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). In doing so, NYCC engages the New York State Education Department in using research-based findings and rigorous evidence. The Center provides technical assistance services to meet the Department’s priority needs and further the key initiatives of the US Department of Education. Additionally, the NYCC works with the State on emerging needs based on new statutes and policy mandates.
This five-year project is directing the evaluation of the Marine Biological Laboratory’s Wolbachia Project, which provides high school teachers and students an opportunity to learn important concepts and techniques as they participate in authentic modern microbiology research.
EDC’s Center for Children and Technology (CCT) is conducting a five-year study, funded by the National Science Foundation, to investigate the impact of an online professional development course on (1) teacher content and pedagogical knowledge and (2) student knowledge.
CCT is working in partnership with PBS TeacherLine New York and the Buffalo PBS affiliate WNED on the study.
EDC will evaluate Adobe Systems Incorporated’s new signature initiative, Adobe Youth Voices (AYV), an international youth media making effort. Adobe and their program partners are training educators in five cities to lead youth media projects. The evaluation team will coordinate on-going evaluation to document the successes and challenges in implementing the initiative; and measure AYF effectiveness in meeting intended outcomes for teachers and students.
Working with science and education professionals, a group of youths will design, build, and staff a virtual science center. Over the course of the project, the youth will acquire Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) knowledge and a range of information and communication technology (ICT) competencies. EDC will conduct the project’s evaluation, looking at the youth’s understanding of science concepts and their development and articulation of ICT workforce skills.
The Columbia Center for New Media Teaching and Learning (CCNMTL) and developmental psychologist Herbert Ginsburg have collaborated on a project that uses video to help teachers look clinically at their early childhood students’ individual learning needs, particularly in mathematics. Through the project, Video Interactions for Teaching and Learning (VITAL), CCNMTL and Dr.
In collaboration with EDC’s Division of Mathematics Learning and Teaching, this project is producing a research-based professional development curriculum focused on geometric thinking in the middle grades. It also creates a framework designed to help teachers better understand geometric thinking and how it develops in learners, a curriculum for professional development in geometry based on this framework, quantitative and qualitative studies of the curriculum’s impact, and research reports disseminating the results of this work.
CSE is developing Explore It!, an out-of-school curriculum in which children explore familiar phenomena in an extended manner using simple materials to foster science learning. These investigations will provide an experiential foundation for the development of concepts aligned with the national standards addressed in formal school curricula.
NEIR*TEC helps state and local educational leaders address the many challenges involved in using technology effectively, emphasizing the needs of schools in underserved urban and rural communities. NEIR*TEC, one of 10 regional technology-in-education consortia, serves the six New England states, New York, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.
This project is producing, piloting, and disseminating the Seeing the Connections curriculum modules. The curriculum helps preservice teachers develop important mathematical knowledge and skills required in their future careers—designing effective lessons, emphasizing certain ideas over others, connecting ideas across the grades, understanding germs of insight in students’ questions, and placing topics in the precollege curriculum in the broader mathematical landscape.
