Barbara McClintock,
Ph.D.
DATES:
1902 - 1992
ABOUT HER
Barbara McClintock was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology
for discovering genetic transposition through her work with the maize
plant. She also learned that chromosomes can mend themselves. She proved
this two decades before molecular biologists were able to do so working
with much simpler cellular structures.
Dr. McClintock
earned her Ph.D. from Cornell University. She was partially or entirely
responsible for each of the discoveries in genetics made by the famous
Cornell maize genetics group. She was also a professor and wrote children's
books.
At the time of
the discoveries that would earn her a Nobel Prize, she felt that she
was not getting the support or acceptance her discoveries deserved.
She persevered. It took more than three decades for her work to win
her the Nobel Prize.
