Bridging the Gaps: Madison Technical Vocational High School, Boston, MA

Background:
Madison Technical Vocational High School is in it's second year working to
deepen the understanding of how issues of gender equity affects students
learning and how teachers can create gender equitable environments that
support success and higher expectations for all students. Some of the
activities this year will include: offering Urban Improv workshops
emphasizing self empowerment and achievement for both boys and girls:
continuing to publish the "Dream Writers Newsletter" with an expanded focus
on encouraging the voices of young women and men in the field of math and
science; and participating in professional workshops.

Emily Hewitt: ESL teacher at Madison Park Technical Vocational High School
M.A. Bilingual /ESL Studies Umass Boston I have taught immigrant teens for
seven years in Boston. Before that I taught adult immigrants in a
community based adult learning program. In the late 70's I worked at Casa
Myrna Vazquez a bilingual shelter for battered women and their children. My
personal and professional experiences in the immigrant community contribute
to my understanding of the issues facing immigrant girls in education. At
Madison I teach young people from Cape
Verde, Brazil, various Hispanic countries (Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico,
and Central America), Haiti and Vietnam. Teaching ESL I believe is based in
creating relationships; therefore I find that I am in a wonderful position
to hear what is on the minds and hearts of my students. I have been a
member
of the Schott Gender Equity Team at Madison for two years. Through this
grant
we have explored issues of gender equity through a cultural lens. We
publish
DreamWriters , a newsletter of student work that reflects some of this
exploration. We have also worked with Urban Improv, a local improvisational
theatre group ,to examine these issues. This gender equity work has been
invigorating!
