Mathematics Leadership Program (MLP)
Mathematical Leadership Program (MLP) is a program of coordinated professional development experience for educational leaders with various roles and responsibilities. The MLP Institutes are designed for teams of teachers, math specialists, coaches, administrators, staff developers, teacher-educators, and others who support the professional development of elementary and middle school teachers in mathematics.
The MLP schedule for summer of 2009 is strategically designed to provide flexibility to school systems by offering a variety of one-week programs structured so that team members may attend one week or two.
MLP INSTITUTE SCHEDULE
MLP consists of six institutes:
- Developing Mathematical Ideas (DMI): Participants choose one of the seven content strands as a focus-offered July 12 to July 18, 2009
- Developing Mathematical Ideas Facilitation (DMIF): Participants choose one of the seven content strands as a focus-offered July 19 to July 24, 2009
- Professional Development for Mathematics Coaching (PDMC) offered from July 19 to July 24, 2009
- Lenses on Learning with a Focus on Systems (LOL-S) offered from July 19 to July 24, 2009.
- Professional Development for MathematicsCoaching Facilitation (PDMC-F) offered from July 26 to July 29, 2009
- Lenses on Learning with a Focus on Systems Facilitation (LOLS-F) offered from July 26 to July 31, 2009.
Participants may apply for any of the one-week programs or may create two-week or three-week programs by applying to more than one institute.
Fees for a one-week program are $2200 per person. Those attending for two of the one-week institutes will receive a discounted price of $3000. The fee for PDMC-F is $1250.
DMI AND DMIF
The DMI professional development materials are comprised of seven modules addressing the following content areas:
Number and Operations & Algebra
- Building a System of Tens (BST): Calculation with Whole Numbers and Decimals (new edition Spring 2009)
- Making Meaning for Operations (MMO): In the Domains of Whole Numbers and Fractions (new edition Spring 2009)
- Reasoning Algebraically about Operations (RAO): In the Domains of Whole Numbers and Integers
- Patterns, Functions and Change (PFC)
Geometry:
- Measuring Space in One, Two, and Three Dimensions (MS123)
- Examining Features of Space (EFS)
Data:
- Working with Data (WWD)
Developing Mathematical Ideas (DMI)
For the DMI institutes, participants will choose one module as a focus. At the institute, participants will experience the module as a participant and learn the content of the module. For summer of 2009, the BST and MMO modules will be designed around the revised edition of these modules which will be published in the spring. Two modules require prerequisite experience. RAO requires prior work with MMO; PFC requires prior work with any of the other DMI modules. These prerequisites are necessary as past experience has shown that without these prior experiences participants in RAO and PFC do not have the most effective experience.
Developing Mathematical Ideas Facilitation (DMI-F)
For the DMIF institute, participants will choose a particular DMI module on which to focus their facilitation work. Participants must choose a module they have previously studied as a participant either at Mount Holyoke or at some other site. The one-week program will include identifying the key ideas of the seminar, examining the central mathematical ideas of the module, discussing the process of interacting with participants both in the seminar sessions and through written responses, and making strategic plans for your site with team members. Each summer new activities are added to the institute agenda, so participants who are returning for a second module of facilitation work will be engaged in activities different from the previous experience.
Professional Development for Mathematics Coaching (PDMC)
For the PDMC institute, participants will be working with a set of recently published materials, Developing a Math Coaching Practice. PDMC is designed for elementary math specialists who have responsibilities for supporting teachers in the development of a strong mathematics education program in individual schools or districts. The institute will engage coaches with mathematics content and help them develop deeper understandings of and strategies for the complexities and challenges of coaching work.
Lenses on Learning with a Focus on Systems (LOL-S)
For the LOLS institute, participants will be working with materials designed for administrators: Secondary Lenses on Learning designed for principals, mathematics specialists, and other school administrators. While the materials have a focus on secondary level, the institute will be expanded to include K-12; the math context of the institute will focus on algebra. Participants will explore a system-wide approach to improving mathematics instruction for all learners.
Professional Development for Mathematics Coaching -Facilitation (PDMC-F)
The PDMC-F institute, a three-day program, is designed for those who provide professional development for coaches and/or support on-going coaching programs in their sites. A prerequisite for PDMC-F is prior work with PDMC or in consultation with the PDMC director.
Lenses on Learning with a Focus on Systems - Facilitation (LOLS-F)
The LOLS-F institute is designed for teams of two who wish to offer a LOLS seminar to administrators in their own sites. LOLS-F will build on the work of LOLS. (LOLS is a prerequisite for LOLS-F). LOLS-F will include work with data drawn from participants' own sites.
LOGISTICS
The 2009 MLP Institutes will be offered in three time blocks: July 12 to July 17, July 19 to July 24 and July 26 to 31. Participants may attend any combination of time blocks. Attending a MLP institute requires a serious commitment. Each institute opens at 2:00 PM on Sunday afternoon. Week one programs will close at noon on Friday July 17; week two programs will close at 4:30 on Friday July 24. PDMC-F closes at 4:00 on Wednesday July 29; LOLS-F closes at noon on Friday July 31. Weekday sessions are held from 8:30 to 5:00, In addition, each evening there are reading and writing assignments.
FEES
Program fees include room and board and all program activities. A one-week program is $2200. Participants who attend for two one-week programs receive a discounted price of $3000. The fee for PDMC-F is $1250.
Participants can arrange to receive two credits for a one-week program and four credits for a two-week program. The credits from Mount Holyoke College are offered at a substantial discount--at a rate of $125 per credit.
ATTENDING MLP INSTITUTES AS A TEAM
Sites are encouraged to send teams of participants. Teams may be composed of participants in all institutes. Each team should identify a team organizer (who may or may not attend one of the institutes) to serve as a contact for the site. As part of the application process, the team organizer should complete the Team Cover Sheet (which can be downloaded from the application page of the website)
APPLICATION PROCESS
Every MLP applicant should complete the entire application form. The information on the last page will be used to process the invoice for program fees. If you wish to attend both time blocks, please send a completed application form for each institute and mark the appropriate sections on the invoice page.
Your application will not be considered until we receive all of the information requested. Early applications are encouraged.
Application forms can be downloaded from the website http://www.edc.org/MLP or requested from jpaquett@mtholyoke.edu or at (413) 538 -2063.
Site Leaders should collect the application forms for all members of the team, verify that the information on the invoice page is correct, complete the site-leader page describing the make-up of the team, and send this material as a single package.
We will begin notifying applicants of their acceptance on February 1, and we will continue accepting applications until the programs are fully subscribed. Invoices will be sent to your institution at the same time as acceptance letters. Acceptance will be provisional until receipt of payment.

REFUNDS
If you are accepted into the program and cannot attend, refunds will be offered only if your place in the program can be filled either by another educator at your site or through our wait list.
LIVING ARRANGEMENTS
All MLP Leadership participants and staff will be housed in a Mount Holyoke College dormitory. Meals will be provided in a Mount Holyoke College campus facility. Please note that while the classroom and dining spaces are air-conditioned, the dormitory rooms are not. The dormitory and meals facility will be available to two-week participants on the weekend between scheduled activities at no additional cost.
Teams attending the leadership program from a distance may wish to rent a car at the airport in order to provide for off-campus transportation. Bradley International Airport in Hartford, CT is the nearest airport. (Mount Holyoke College is a 45-minute drive from Bradley, a two-hour drive from Logan Airport in Boston.) Additional information concerning program logistics will be provided with the acceptance letter.
