I have been following the discussion about AUPs. In Columbus Public Schools
we have two policies - one for students and one for employees. In a large
urban district with over 64,000 students and 5,000 employees, the AUP is
not always easy to manage. I, too like the idea of a popup menu with the
policy, but that idea was vetoed by our MIS department that controls the
network. We had planned to put it on the CPS Home Page.

Each school maintains the paper records. We suggested that the AUP be part
of the beginning of the year ritual and the signed form be part of the
"important information" card each parent fills out. Two of our biggest
problems are 1. getting the information home to the parent and 2. getting
the information back. And once you have the signed form, it is only good
for one year. The whole process must be repeated.

When we revised our policies we fashioned them around Nancy Willard's
templates. We added some items, deleted some items, and changed some of the
language. It had to go through 3 readings by our lawyers. After a year, it
is now ready to go before the BOE to become Board Policy.
