This LC/Ameritech award-winner will be coming to American Memory, but not
right away. For now, you can see it at the Ohio Historical Society's
website. Eventually it will be worked into the A.M. search and browse
structures. It will, no doubt, undergo some changes on its way to A.M.

The African American Experience in Ohio: 1850-1920

The African American Experience in Ohio follows Ohio African Americans from
pre-Civil War abolition efforts through the Civil War and post-war
reconstruction years to the political and religious activism of the early
20th century.

The collection was compiled by digitizing 28,000 pages of manuscripts,
serials, pamplets, and photos and prints held by the Archives/Library and
the society's National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center in
Wilberforce.

Among items included are 50 images from the society's Wilbur H. Siebert
collection pertaining to the Underground Railroad and issues of
19th-century African American newspapers published in Columbus, Cincinnati,
Dayton, Cleveland and Urbana. Also part of the collection are 28 interviews
with ex-slaves, gathered by the Work Projects Administration in 1937-38 and
previously available only to visitors at the Ohio Historical Society's
Archives/Library in Columbus.
