Hey you guys,
Carl's right--woke us up "impeachment" did, and bombs, too. Now, I'm
wide awake.
Interesting how the national news affects us differently depending on
our proximity to the East Coast. Out here in Grunge-World, Portland OR,
mostly I hear people talking about the rain and Saddam. My high school
students respond to the mention of Monica, Bill and the whole mess as if
someone just told an inappropriate joke. Two-thirds of my juniors are
native to the Pacific Rim, or Romania, many very religious, and they'd
all rather stick to the material at hand, "Their Eyes Are Watching
God." We'll be using the AM data for group research projects on
immigration, Reconstruction and the Harlem Renaissance after the
holidays.
Impeachment, the hearings, and the media's coverage of same provides a
wealth of material for units connected to George Orwell's novels; the
play "Twelve Angry Men;" critical thinking, logical fallacies, and the
National Council of English Teachers excellent material on
"doublespeak."

Peace on earth and goodwill to all
Kris Demien
