American Memory Fellows:
What follows is an invitation to join other educators in devleoping on-line
projects that will model sensible ways to employ the resources of the New Deal
Network(a collaboration between the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute
and Columbia University) in technology classrooms. Selected applicants will
enjoy a small stipend and the wonders of Vassar College and an opportunity to
visit with scholars and the Roosevelt Library and home in Hyde Park, New York.
Thsi would offer an opportunity to take some of the ideas inspired and spawned
by the projects with the LOC in a slightly different direction.

Join the Civilian Computer Corps!
The New Deal Network (http://newdeal.feri.org) is looking for K-12
teachers to take part in the 1999 Summer New Deal Network Teachers
Workshop, to be held at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. and at the
FDR Library in Hyde Park between Saturday, July 10 and Saturday, July
17. The workshop, which is funded in part by the National Endowment for
the Humanities, will focus on the development of Web-based New Deal era
projects for future classroom use. Activities scheduled for the week
will include: films and lectures featuring New Deal historians; an
introduction to the use of primary documents at the Franklin D.
Roosevelt Presidential Library; workshops on the use of the New Deal
Network and other online resources in the classroom; project-focused Web
development and design workshops; and the presentation of individual
works-in-progress to the Workshop group. We will also visit many of the
important historical sites in the area, including the Roosevelt Home and
Museum, Val Kill, and Top Cottage.
The grant will pay airfare, mileage at $.325 per mile for those
traveling by car up to a maximum of $500, or roundtrip train fare for
those of you in the New York City metropolitan area. Vassar College will
be providing lodging and meals during the workshop from the Welcoming
Dinner on Saturday, July 10 through lunch on Saturday, July 17. In
addition, each participant will receive a $500 stipend. Applicants
should submit a project proposal (maximum one page), a description of
their knowledge of the Internet and the level of Internet access in
their school, a resume, and the names of two references familiar with
their teaching (eg., a department head and/or principal).
Projects should provide opportunities for your students to discover the
impact of the New Deal in their own communities, to document their
findings, and to create Web pages reporting on their research and
conclusions. Projects might also include interacting with classrooms
elsewhere in the country or the creation of curriculum based on New Deal
materials. These pages will then be linked to the New Deal Website.
Several projects, some of them created by participants in the 1998 NDN
summer workshop, can be accessed on the New Deal Network at
http://newdeal.feri.org.
Applications should be postmarked no later than January 15th, 1999.
The selection of participants will be announced by the end of February
15th, 1999. Please feel free to contact the project director, Thomas

project ideas.
