German Immigrants

The lesson will help students understand  the contributions of German immigrants to the language, culture, and customs of the Upper Midwest in the late19th century and early 20th century. The lesson will be primarily based on materials in three American Memory Collections:

• Pioneering the Upper Midwest: Books from Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin, 1880-1910
• The Northern Great Plains, 1880-1920: Photographs from the Fred Hultstrand and F.A. Pazandak Photograph Collections
• Touring Turn-of-The Century America: Photographs from the Detroit Publishing Company, 1880-1920
